History #8: Commentarii de Bello Gallico
The Jan-Mar 2025 History subscription book will be Julius Caesar's commentaries on the Gallic Wars.
Commentarii de Bello Gallico is Gaius Julius Caesar's firsthand account of the Gallic Wars. In it, Caesar describes the battles and intrigues that took place in the nine years he spent fighting the Celtic and Germanic peoples in Gaul that opposed Roman conquest. The work has been a mainstay in Latin instruction because of its simple, direct prose. It begins with the frequently quoted phrase Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres, meaning "Gaul is a whole divided into three parts". The full work is split into eight sections, Book 1 to Book 8; Book 8 was written by Aulus Hirtius, after Caesar's death.
In History production news, we are in the process of preparing the Bibliography for printing and we are fine-tuning the hub stamps for the two Byzantium volumes. We expect to be able to start shipping both Cambridge Byzantine histories around the end of the month.
This two-volume set is one of the most visually-impressive and content-rich books we have ever produced; the elite Spanish cowhide we’re using for the first time is, to be honest, more expensive than we should probably be using at this price point. There are only 37 sets left available from the print run; the two books can be purchased together here:
I know that you can't get the Landmark version right now, but we only get four books a year. I wouldn't be surprised if you can get it in a few years and then we'll be doing it again for book #18.
Oman's England, Breasted's Egypt, or biographies on figures such as Peter the Great could be options. Are there any good books on Chinese history that we could do?
